Over ten percent of the Chinese characters are polyphones, this represents another fairly complex problem for Chinese learners.
The polyphonic characters are important. On the one hand, mastering a polyphone is compared with knowing serveral characters, but on the other hand, when a polyphone is used wrongly, it will leave one with egg on the face!
The polyphone table in the program "Chinese Character Bible" lists all polyphonic characters(759) in the National Standard Chinese Character Set GB2312.
